‘It’s supposed to be quiet’ – Tennessee DB Colton Hood drops quote that should have Vols fans feeling proud of themselves

Tennessee Vols fans have a reputation for being intense. But that intensity is part of what makes Tennessee fans some of the best in college football. Vols fans always show up in droves.

Tennessee Vols cornerback Colton Hood made one of the most exciting plays of the season (so far) last month in UT’s 41-34 overtime win over the Mississippi State Bulldogs.

Hood intercepted a pass from Mississippi State quarterback Blake Shapen and returned it for a touchdown in the first quarter. The pick six gave the Vols an early lead.

Colton Hood heard plenty of Tennessee Vols fans in Starkville during his interception return

Hood said during an appearance on Everything Orange this week that he was expecting the fans to be quiet during his interception return. But lots of Vols fans made the trip to Starkville for the game, so Hood heard plenty of cheers as he returned the interception for a touchdown.

“When we played Mississippi State, it was like a home game,” said Hood. “I’m taking the interception to the end zone and it’s supposed to be quiet — [but] it’s not quiet. Everybody was screaming. It’s definitely crazy.”

Hood also praised Vols fans for showing up in Starkville during a recent appearance on The Players Lounge Tennessee.

“That was crazy,” said Hood of seeing so many Vols fans in Starkville. “I’ve never seen anything like that — at an away game that was sold out. They talked about how the game is gonna be sold out. You’re thinking it’s gonna be mostly Mississippi State [fans] — the whole sideline on our side was orange. And then you got people up in the top in orange. That’s crazy.

“I didn’t know really too much about Tennessee before coming here, but just seeing the fan base and how crazy they are for us, like, that’s crazy. It’s mad love. It also makes you want to play harder. Like, bro, these people came out of their way to come see us. They came all the way to Starkville, Mississippi.”

There are a lot of great fan bases in college football, but I don’t think there’s any doubt that Vol Nation is near the top of the list.
