Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel sent an important message to Vols QB Joey Aguilar after win over Arkansas
Tennessee Vols quarterback Joey Aguilar took a couple of tough hits in UT’s 34-31 win over the Arkansas Razorbacks on Saturday in Neyland Stadium.
Tennessee Vols head coach Josh Heupel had a wise suggestion for quarterback Joey Aguilar on Saturday after UT’s 34-31 win over the Arkansas Razorbacks.
Aguilar passed for 221 yards and a touchdown, while also totaling 59 rushing yards, against the Razorbacks.
The former Appalachian State quarterback took a couple of tough hits during the game, including one near the end of regulation where he was forced to the sideline for one play.
Aguilar told reporters after the game that he had the wind knocked out of him on that play.
“I feel good right now,” said Aguilar. “But, yeah, that ball was deep in my stomach. That took the air out of me for sure.”
Aguilar also crashed into the Arkansas communication system on the sideline in the first half.
Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel wants to see Joey Aguilar take fewer hits
Heupel told reporters after the game that he’d prefer to see Aguilar take fewer hits.
“He turned the numbers into our favor there at the end,” said Heupel of Aguilar’s run near the end of the fourth quarter. “I want him to get down once the play is over. Just knocked the wind out of himself. So in that way, it’s a positive. But I would like him not to take that hit at the very end.”
It was a scary moment for Tennessee when Aguilar stayed down for several minutes. Fortunately, he was alright. But that may not be the case next time. Aguilar is a highly competitive player who will do everything he can to pick up positive yards on a play.
And you certainly don’t want to take that part of his game away if you’re Heupel. But at the same time, Aguilar has to be smart. There are some tremendous athletes in the SEC that can inflict plenty of pain on opposing quarterbacks.
The last thing the Vols need is for Aguilar to suffer an injury because he was trying to extend a play.
