Sports Illustrated continues to blatantly disrespect Tennessee Vols quarterback Joey Aguilar. And it’s getting really hard to understand why that’s the case.
Sports Illustrated either doesn’t know Tennessee Vols quarterback Joey Aguilar exists, or they just enjoy disrespecting the California native.
For whatever reason, Sports Illustrated didn’t include Aguilar among their top Heisman Trophy candidates after Week 7 of the college football season.
Not only did Sports Illustrated not include Aguilar in their updated top-five Heisman Trophy candidates on Sunday, they also didn’t mention Aguilar under “others considered” or as an “under-the-radar” candidate.
Tennessee Vols QB Joey Aguilar currently leads the SEC in passing yards.
Aguilar wasn’t included among Sports Illustrated’s top Heisman Trophy candidates this week despite the fact that he currently leads the SEC in passing yards.
Through the first six games of the season, Aguilar has passed for 1,680 yards and 14 touchdowns. He’s also rushed for 177 yards and two touchdowns while leading Tennessee to a 5-1 record.
Here’s Sports Illustrated’s top five Heisman candidates, along with their stats so far this season.
Carson Beck — Miami — 1,218 passing yards, 11 passing touchdowns, 18 rushing yards, one rushing touchdown*
Ty Simpson — Alabama — 1,678 passing yards, 16 passing touchdowns, 58 rushing yards, two rushing touchdowns
Fernando Martinez — Indiana — 1,423 passing yards, 17 passing touchdowns, 133 rushing yards, two rushing touchdowns
Dante Moore — Oregon — 1,396 passing yards, 15 passing touchdowns, 95 rushing yards, 0 rushing touchdowns
Julian Sayin — Ohio State — 1,479 yard passing yards, 15 passing touchdowns, 10 rushing yards, 0 rushing touchdowns
*Carson Beck has only played five games, while the rest of these quarterbacks have all played six games
Look, I’m not saying Aguilar should be considered the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy right now. But his numbers are clearly in line with the other quarterbacks on Sports Illustrated’s list (and Tennessee is 5-1 and ranked No. 11 in the nation). Aguilar undoubtedly deserves to be included among the current Heisman Trophy contenders.

‘I don’t want to say it’s personal’ – Alabama QB Ty Simpson has a history with Tennessee, and he’s ready to face the Vols
Alabama Crimson Tide QB Ty Simpson was recruited heavily by the Tennessee Vols. Josh Heupel, however, had just been hired to replace Jeremy Pruitt, and Simpson couldn’t pull the trigger on committing to Tennessee.
