NASHVILLE — Now-fired Tennessee Titans (1-5) coach Brian Callahan’s record with the club was more than enough to cost him his job. One quote postgame about rookie quarterback Cam Ward’s struggles likely sealed his fate.
Week 6 is the earliest a coach has ever been fired in the “Titans Era” of the franchise (1999-present).
Cam Ward’s regression is on the coaching staff
Ward appears to be regressing in his first NFL season through these first six games.
“Yeah, I’m incredibly discouraged by the outcome,” Callahan said after a 20-10 road loss to the Las Vegas Raiders (2-4) on Sunday. “We felt good coming into the game, and to not be able to perform well on offense and not be able to score any points and then lose a game is disappointing. We’ve all got to be better. Cam [Ward] is a part of that, too. Cam’s play better football as well. And we’ve got to coach better, we’ve got to play better, all those things. It’s not all just him, but he is a part of it. And we’d like to be able to start seeing some more good football being played, and we’ve got to do a better job.”
Ward finished the game 26/38 passing, 222 yards, one touchdown, one interception and two lost fumbles in Las Vegas.
It was by no means harsh, but a 4-19 coach even remotely perceived as criticizing the No. 1 overall pick he was supposed to develop. Compounded with Ward and star defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons saying that Tennessee followed up their lone win of the NFL season with “one of their worst weeks of practice,” the writing for Callahan was on the wall.
Can’t call out the QB like that,” said one active NFL coach. “Bad all the way around.”
