The San Francisco Giants have reportedly offered Tennessee Vols baseball coach Tony Vitello their manager’s job.

Vitello is expected to make a decision in the next day or two.

If Vitello leaves Tennessee for the Giants, he’ll be the first college coach to make the jump straight into an MLB manager’s job without having previous MLB playing or coaching experience.

There’s one person to blame for Tony Vitello possibly leaving Tennessee for the Giants, and it’s not Vols AD Danny White

A lot of folks on social media seem to be blaming Vols athletic director Danny White for Tennessee potentially losing Vitello to the Giants.

The real person to blame, though, is former MLB catcher Nick Hundley, who was reportedly the front-runner for the job last week.

According to The Athletic, Hundley took himself out of the running for the job.

“There’s every indication that the job was Hundley’s if he wanted it,” wrote The Athletic’s Andrew Baggarly on Saturday. “The former Willie Mac Award winner is one of Posey’s best friends in the game and models Posey’s stated desire to hire a servant leader whose presence commands respect in every room he enters…..but becoming a major-league manager would require signing himself over to the demands of a six-week spring training and a 162-game schedule. Hundley wasn’t sure he was ready to make that commitment right now, and it’s likely that he wouldn’t have seriously considered it for anyone other than Posey.”

If Hundley says yes to Posey, then it’s business as usual for Vitello at Tennessee.

But once Hundley said no, Vitello was next on the list.

And now, Vols fans have to wait on Vitello’s decision.
