Tough decision made by the Jets in Week 7 doesn’t bode well for Justin Fields’ future with the franchise
It will be tough for him to come back from this one.
The New York Jets aren’t having much fun this season. In Aaron Glenn’s first campaign, the offense has been horrific, and the defense cannot overcome that even when they do play well. With the offensive issues, quarterback Justin Fields hasn’t played up to par, and New York finally drew a line in Week 7 against the Carolina Panthers.
After halftime, the Jets replaced Fields with veteran backup QB Tyrod Taylor.
Jets bench Justin Fields versus Panthers amid struggles on offense
Fields threw for 46 yards on 6/12 passing. He also ran the bal four times for 22 rushing yards. At the half, New York had just three points, and Fields took a hard hit early on that spurred some frustration from his teammates and a penalty call on the Panthers. Even against a less-than-stellar Panthers unit defensively, Fields could not find much success.
This has become a trend ever since Week 2 for the Jets. Fields impressed and produced in Week 1, but since then, he hasn’t looked like the same passer or processor. Accordingly, this bold, but necessary, decision by New York has placed his future with the team up in the air.
Fields signed a 2-year, $40 million contract this offseason, joining the Jets after spending last year with the Pittsburgh Steelers. While he found some early success with Mike Tomlin’s squad, the Steelers opted to roll with veteran QB Russell Wilson for most of last season. After seeing Wilson’s performances this year for the New York Giants, that was an early indication that Fields may have trouble keeping a starting job in the pros.
For New York, they will almost assuredly be selecting in the top five of the 2026 NFL Draft. The quarterback class still has plenty to prove and room to shake out over the next few months. Regardless, Fields’ time as the starter could be coming to an end for the Jets.
