Tennessee Vols legend sends strong message to fans about UT head coach Josh Heupel
Former Tennessee Vols wide receiver Donté Stallworth had a message this week for fans in regards to UT head coach Josh Heupel
Former Tennessee Vols wide receiver Donté Stallworth had a message this week for UT fans who are calling for head coach Josh Heupel’s job.
Some frustrated Vols fans are unhappy with Heupel after Tennessee’s sloppy performance in the 37-20 loss to the Alabama Crimson Tide this past weekend.
The Volunteers had some coaching mishaps — specifically in big situational moments — and they struggled with penalties and drops in the loss to Bama.
Donté Stallworth makes it clear where he stands on Josh Heupel
Stallworth, who played at Tennessee from 1998 to 2001, sent out a tweet on Monday in support of Heupel.
“Any Tennessee fans even remotely calling for Heupel’s job: I love y’all, but you’ve gone mad,” tweeted Stallworth. “Let’s not forget he pulled us from the deepest depths of CFB hell!! We shouldn’t be happy about the Bama game, but no one’s more angry or disappointed than the players and staff.
“There were plenty of mistakes in that Bama game, but I have all the faith in Heupel, the staff, and the players to self-scout, fix the errors, and move forward. You can’t let last week’s loss — or win — linger into next game prep. It sucks, but it’s over. We’re on to Kentucky.”
Stallworth is spot on. There are obviously areas where Heupel and his staff need have to improve moving forward. But that’s always going to be the case in sports — you always have to adapt, evolve, learn, and grow. Heupel, though, has brought a level of success to Rocky Top that hasn’t been seen since Phillip Fulmer was the head coach nearly two decades ago. Heupel has proved he can win big games, but he won’t win every big game.
By the way, Heupel’s team was far from the only one in the SEC to be on the wrong side of the scoreboard this past weekend because of poor execution and poor coaching. Sometimes good teams have bad games.
