A jaw-dropping stat highlights the absurdity of Tennessee’s dominance and Kentucky’s futility over the last four years
Josh Heupel and the Vols have thrived in the face of the Wildcats’ misery in recent years.
The Tennessee Volunteers picked up a much-needed bounce-back win over the Kentucky Wildcats on Saturday night in Lexington, handily defeating their border rivals 56-34.
The win moved Josh Heupel to 3-0 against Kentucky on the road in his five seasons. And those three wins going back to this date in 2021 are, incredibly, more SEC wins at Kroger Field than the Wildcats have had over that same span.
Tennessee has more wins against Kentucky at Kroger Field over the last four years (3) than Kentucky has SEC home wins themselves (2)
Tennessee defeated Kentucky back on Nov. 6, 2021, 45-42 in Lexington. After that date, Kentucky had no more SEC home games for the remainder of the season. Its last SEC home win that year was on Oct. 9 against LSU (which, as an aside, has since been vacated due to NCAA violations).
Fast forward to 2022, and Kentucky won just one home SEC game – 27-17 over Mississippi State on Oct. 15. In 2023, Kentucky picked up another home win over Florida on Sept. 30, its only home SEC win of the year. Later that year, on Oct. 28, Tennessee escaped with a 33-27 win over the Wildcats in Lexington, getting Kroger Field win No. 2 for Heupel.
Since that time, Kentucky has gone winless at home in SEC play. It was 1-7 in SEC play last year, with its only win at Ole Miss. This year, again, it’s winless at home in conference play, and that includes Tennessee’s win yesterday, which gave Heupel win No. 3 in Lexington since Nov. 6, 2021.
That’s three wins for Heupel at Kroger Field since November 2021, and just two for Mark Stoops and the Wildcats since then. If that doesn’t show Tennessee’s dominance in the rivalry and Kentucky’s recent struggles under Mark Stoops, then I don’t know what does.
