Colts get a a big boost that should help to improve a major weakness on their roster ahead of Week 9

All the talk surrounding the 7-1 Indianapolis Colts Week 9 matchup with the 4-3 Pittsburgh Steelers has been about the Steelers’ struggling secondary. The Colts have also had their fair share of trouble stopping opposing QBs, though. Their CB room has been dealing with a mountain of injuries, and it’s been a hurdle the team has had to overcome. Thankfully, they will be getting a bit of a boost there this week with Jaylon Jones officially activated off the IR.

Colts activate CB Jaylon Jones off the IR

Jones began training camp battling for the second outside starting CB job in Lou Anarumo’s defense. Sadly, he suffered a hamstring injury early in camp and was forced to miss multiple weeks as a result. He fought his way back for the season opener, but reaggravated the injury and landed on the IR as a result.

He’s missed the past seven weeks but has been working his way back at practice over the last two weeks. He is now back and should be in line to start opposite Mekhi Blackmon at CB. Starting now, Jones will also be competing to be the team’s full-time starter when star Charvarius Ward returns. There are reports that the Colts are working the phones and looking for a CB ahead of the trade deadline. And even if a move isn’t made, he is competing with Blackmon.

A big game in Week 9 could prove to the team that they just need a depth piece at CB instead of a starting-caliber player. A rough showing could tell the Colts they desperately need to make a move ahead of Tuesday. More importantly, though, Jones is an upgrade from UDFA Jonathan Edwards, who has been starting and struggling since Wards’ injury. So, this impacts the Colts’ game plan for stopping the Steelers’ offense in a big way.
