The Oklahoma Sooners won a de facto College Football Playoff elimination game against the Tennessee Vols on Saturday night in Neyland Stadium.

Tennessee is 6-3 after the loss to Oklahoma. It’s extremely unlikely that a three-loss team will make the College Football Playoff (there would need to be a LOT of chaos over the next few weeks).

Oklahoma, meanwhile, is still alive in the College Football Playoff picture, but the Sooners have a lot of work to do with games remaining against Alabama, Missouri, and LSU.

Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables gets emotional after win over Tennessee

There was a lot of talk about Oklahoma trending in the wrong direction before this weekend’s game against Tennessee.

That’s why it wasn’t a surprise that Sooners head coach Brent Venables was fired up after beating the Vols in Knoxville.

“Can’t even put it in proper words and perspective,” said Venables to sideline reporter Chris Plank after the game. “Just the belief of this football team, in the middle of all the noise and everything else, and just another overcoming a week of disappointment last week. I’m not surprised. But man, this is a team that just came together and refused to flinch.

“All the moments coming on the road, winning in this league, man, you got to do what winning requires. And when we needed to, we were able ran the ball and throw it, got stops, create turnovers. Not everything went our way tonight, and I’m glad it didn’t. You know, we’re able to overcome and just be able to teach these guys like, when’s enough going to be enough? For me. When’s enough going to be enough? Put respect on this name across our chest — that’s our responsibility, every one of us, to put respect on this name. When the freakin last second goes off that clock, what are they gonna say on SportsCenter about this football team? What’s the country that loves college football? What are they gonna say about the Sooners? I just couldn’t be more excited or proud.”

Venables and the Sooners certainly took some heat from the national media this past week following their loss to the Ole Miss Rebels in late October.

I’m guessing it’ll be the Vols that feel some of that heat this week.
