Against the Tennessee Volunteers, for most of the game, the Oklahoma Sooners played without their best defender, edge rusher R Mason Thomas. After his scoop and score touchdown, Thomas sat out the rest of the game. Near the end of the score, he started limping, almost as if he had pulled a hamstring or something of that nature. Nonetheless, they beat the Vols on the road.

The Sooners are on a bye this week, but they play the Alabama Crimson Tide next week. On Wednesday, Brent Venables was asked if there was a possibility of Thomas being available for that game.

“Yeah, we will just continue to evaluate him. It’s still just a couple of days into it, so we will see where he is at and I’ll let you know when I know more,” Venables told Georgia Stoia of SoonerScoop.com during the SEC media Teleconference.

Sooners will need Thomas vs. Alabama

On Tuesday, we learned that the Oklahoma Sooners are the 12th seed in the current College Football Playoffs rankings. Some of you may be thinking, ‘Hey, if it’s a 12-team playoff, that must mean we’re in, right?’

Wrong. The Oklahoma Sooners, and the Texas Longhorns at No. 11, are the first two out, because the conference winner of the ACC and a Group of Five team have to get in. Those two teams are below the Sooners, as they are currently the Virginia Cavaliers and the Memphis Tigers.

So, a win against Alabama, a team that’s currently set to be ranked anywhere in the top four, is very important for Oklahoma. This team beat the Tide last season, in what was an absolutely insane game. However, these two teams are pretty different. The Sooners have an elite defense, and Alabama looks to be one of the more complete teams in the country.

If Oklahoma beats Alabama, they can jump up the rankings easily. If they lose to Alabama, they’re likely out of the CFB. So, they will need all hands on deck, including R Mason Thomas.
