Oklahoma Sooners have the unexpected happen to their program as one player decides to go a different route
Porter Moser and the Oklahoma Sooners have lost Alec Blair to the baseball program.
Earlier this week, the Oklahoma Sooners basketball program got word that one of their scholarship players would be leaving the program and going to play baseball for head coach Skip Johnson. Basketball head coach Porter Moser would be losing some depth in freshman wing Alec Blair.
Blair was a two-sport athlete, and the assumption is that he chose OU because he could play both collegiately. According to Joe Doyle, Blair was looked at as a first-round prospect in the 2025 MLB Draft, but went undrafted because of signability concerns. Blair was a Top 100 basketball recruit for OU and is on scholarship, but now he’s choosing baseball.
In their season opener, the Oklahoma Sooners won, but Blair only played three minutes, registering one point and one rebound. In a game where the Sooners won by nearly 40, you’d think Blair would play more. Now, he’s doing strictly baseball after Moser and Johnson worked all summer to keep Blair a two-sport athlete.
Porter Moser talks about Blair as a two-sport athlete
“Skip and his staff were phenomenal, and it was fun pairing up with them,” said Moser. “Their program has a lot of energy, they recruit with a lot of energy, we did, and I think tag-teaming with Skip and his staff was great. And we are gonna work with them to make it happen. I think that’s part of it too, of talking to Skip, like, ‘Let’s make this work,’ you know?
“So he’s gonna have his time there — although he is on a basketball scholarship. But I would want… Like I said, I love two-sport athletes. I just think there’s a discipline about ’em, there’s a maturity about it, and an understanding. I just think there are a lot of great things, and I think he’s gonna be really successful doing both. And it was, you know… Skip and his staff are first class and just high-energy, very hard-working, thorough, and we’re gonna make it work.”
Now the Sooners will be without a guy who they were likely needing to provide depth. That’s huge, especially for this team, which has some real potential to be great this year and win some games in the tournament. However, this does give someone else on the team a chance to prove themselves and step up in the absence of Blair.
