Giants QB Jameis Winston sends powerful message that could rally the locker room before facing the Packers
New York Giants backup QB Jameis Winston expressed his excitement for making his first start against the Green Bay Packers
The New York Giants are navigating a complex situation this week as they prepare for the Green Bay Packers. Not only are they preparing for life after Brian Daboll, but they’re also preparing to compete without their starting quarterback, Jaxson Dart.
Interim head coach Mike Kafka announced today that Jameis Winston will step up and start this Sunday and become the backup quarterback once Dart returns. The former first overall pick is eager to step onto the field for the first time in 2025.
“I’ve been waiting on this moment, man. So, the shock was off, the rust is off. It’s like, hey, you get to play,” Winston told reporters, “And when you get to play, nothing else matters but taking it one play at a time and doing your very best. Because we all have different circumstances, conditions, and facts, and I know that.”
Jameis Winsot prepares to start vs the Packers
During a week of despair, Winston has surprisingly become a source of excitement for the Giants’ fan base. Every week up until Daboll’s firing was filled with frustration, confusion, and negativity.
Now the most expressive and excited player on the Giants is getting an opportunity he should have earned a long time ago. Winston has long passed his time as a full-time starter in this league, but he was consistently labelled as one of the top backup quarterbacks in the NFL. Despite that, he was stuck behind Wilson.
Winston is one of those players who, when you hear him talk, you want to root for him. He’s displayed a team-first attitude despite having every reason to be dejected and disinterested. Being a backup lacks glamor and often respect, but he’s used his position to become a locker room leader. Winston expressed his gratefulness for the opportunity to play.
“But, man, I’m extremely grateful. I choose to focus on what’s true and that’s my mentality, that’s my
opportunity, being able to lead this team, and that’s my action,” Winston told the media, “So going out there, being energetic, enthusiastic, serving every single way that I can, and playing the best football I possibly can play.”
In 2015, Winston was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to be their franchise savior. Things didn’t exactly go according to plan, and he turned into a career backup. While in New York, it almost appeared that Winston would never play again, with Dart dominating and Wilson ahead of him. According to Winston, it never even crossed his mind that he might never see the field for another game in his career.
“I never thought about not playing another game because that’s what I attract,” Winston stated, “And every time I’m on the sideline, do you see me on the sideline? I might not be on the field, but I’m playing the game. You know what I’m saying? That’s just the love and passion that I have for this game, man. Like, I’m always playing the game. Now, I might not be playing the game physically, and don’t you say that we’re not speaking that. But I’m playing the game. Every single game I’m out there prepared to play.”
Winston’s first opportunity to start in 2025 will be intriguing but challenging. The Green Bay Packers boast one of the best defenses in the NFL and will not make things easy for the Giants’ offense.
