NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that the Indianapolis Colts were one of a few teams interested in signing veteran DT Khalen Saunders.

The Colts are without star DT DeForest Buckner, who is required to miss at least the next three games on IR with a neck injury. Adding depth there to strengthen the interior of the Colts’ line makes sense, given their tough upcoming schedule. Unfortunately, this pairing wasn’t meant to be with the news that Saunders is signing with the New York Jets instead.

Colts don’t land DT Khalen Saunders as he signs with the Jets

Saunders appeared in two games with the Jacksonville Jaguars this season before being released. He spent the previous two years with the New Orleans Saints, where he appeared in 30 games, after his first four years in the league were spent with the Kansas City Chiefs.

He won two Super Bowls as a member of the Chiefs, and some assumed he would return to Kansas City now that he had become a free agent.

Via his social media account, it seems Saunders himself also wanted a reunion with the Chiefs. He could have been a solid depth option for the Colts, who are already without Buckner and have seen Grover Stewart play while being banged up. And with the Colts being 8-2, a chance to win now could also have been a solid selling point to Saunders.

Instead, he signed with the 2-8 Jets. This would have been a boost for the Colts’ defense, but it’s far from being a devastating blow to miss out on him.

The team has seen some solid play from Adetomiwa Adebawore and Neville Gallimore when they’ve been on the field. As long as Stewart stays healthy, the team can likely find a way to battle through Buckner’s absence. If Stewart is ever sidelined, however, the team will have to figure out an alternative solution that isn’t Saunders.
