Bills scramble with emergency roster move as injuries pile up and the hits keep coming before ‘Thursday Night Football’
The team was forced to shake up the roster ahead of ‘Thursday Night Football.’
The Buffalo Bills pulled off the thrilling win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but the excitement from the victory was short-lived as the team set its sights on the “Thursday Night Football” matchup against the Houston Texans.
Unfortunately, the injury bug continues to wreak havoc on the organization, forcing the team to make some emergency roster moves.
Newly-acquired wide receiver Mecole Hardman made an impact in the return game in his debut with the Bills, but a calf injury could see him sidelined on Thursday.
Because of Hardman’s injury, the team signed punt and kick returner Brandon Codrington to the practice squad. If Hardman can’t play, Codrington would slot in as his replacement — only in the return game, though.
Over his two-year career, Codrington has returned 37 punts for 371 yards and 25 kick returns for 681 yards. He hasn’t found the end zone and was a healthy scratch for Buffalo in several games throughout the 2025 season. Hardman was brought on to help bolster that unit, considering the issues that Codrington has had.
Hardman isn’t the only player missing time
It’s an unfortunate update, given how quickly Hardman joined the team and then got hurt. There’s been no update, as of the time of publication, on the severity of the injury or the timeline for his return. It’s also not a guarantee that he will be out on Thursday, but the team signing Codrington would make sense if the team fears Hardman will be unable to compete.
Head coach Sean McDermott, when speaking to the media on Tuesday, said Hardman wouldn’t practice, along with defensive tackle Phidarian Mathis, wide receiver Curtis Samuel, and tight end Dalton Kincaid.
Once again, if Hardman is out, the Bills will go with a next-man-up mentality. Injuries are inevitable, but the number of players who could be missing some time is more than a little alarming. Fortunately, Buffalo scooped up a potential kick and punt return replacement who knows the system and has spent substantial time with the team in his career.
All that’s left to do is wait.
