Vanderbilt Commodores quarterback Diego Pavia has a good friend who plays for the Tennessee Vols, but he doesn’t plan on speaking to him this week.

Tennessee and Vanderbilt are set to play in Knoxville on Saturday afternoon.

Pavia, who transferred from New Mexico State to Vanderbilt ahead of the 2024 season, is a former teammate of Vols running back Star Thomas, who played with Pavia at New Mexico State in 2022 and 2023.

The Vanderbilt quarterback joined Hot Mic this week, and he was asked if he’ll speak with Thomas ahead of the game.

Thomas came up when Pavia was asked about Vols quarterback Joey Aguilar.

“I don’t know [Aguilar] too well,” said Pavia. “I mean, he’s obviously leading Tennessee to a pretty good season. So props to him. I heard he’s a good kid, too. My friend Star Thomas is over there, so he thinks highly of him. But I’m just ready for a competitive game and ready to go leave it all on the field.”

“Nah, I will not talk to Star this [week],” added Pavia when asked if he’ll chat with his former teammate.

That’s the way rivalry games are supposed to be. It’s clear this game means a lot to both sides — beyond just the College Football Playoff implications for Vanderbilt.

Update:

Plot twist! Thomas spoke to reporters on Tuesday and said Pavia called him on Monday. Thomas said he answered the call, but it was “all jokes and stuff.” It’s clearly all love between the two, but it won’t be on Saturday afternoon in Knoxville.
