You could have heard a pen drop in Lucas Oil Stadium when Indianapolis Colts star CB Sauce Gardner went down with a non-contact calf injury. The moment probably had some fans in attendance feeling déjà vu, recalling when Indiana Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton tore his Achilles in the NBA Finals this summer.

Thankfully, that wasn’t the same fate for Gardner, as he and the team have now confirmed that his Achilles is, in fact, fine. He is instead dealing with a calf strain, which is still not ideal but far from the devastating injury many assumed it would be. The team seems to have a good grasp of what to do next as they work to get Gardner back on the field sooner rather than later.

Sauce Gardner is not heading to the IR but will miss time

Colts head coach Shane Steichen made it clear that the team does not plan to place Gardner on the IR. This means the team must feel fairly confident that he will be back before the 4-week minimum required if placed on the IR.

At this time, the only thing that feels certain is that he will miss this Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The winner of this matchup will walk away as the leader in the AFC South. A loss for the Colts could very well drop them to third in the AFC South by the week’s end.

The upcoming matchups following Week 14 will also be challenging. The team is on the road in Week 15 to take on the Seattle Seahawks and will host the San Francisco 49ers on Monday Night Football in Week 16.

Then the team finishes its season series with both the Jaguars and the Houston Texans. The Colts have little room for error down the stretch and will likely need to win at least three of their last five to have a chance at the division crown.
