The Minnesota Vikings are still reeling from a brutal 26-0 shutout loss to the Seattle Seahawks Sunday afternoon, and it wouldn’t have surprised anyone if they made a move to change things up.

That move came about on Monday, but it wasn’t one you would have expected, as they waived wide receiver Adam Thielen.

Minnesota Vikings grant Adam Thielen’s request for his release

Once Thielen was a healthy scratch on Sunday, it felt like his time in Minnesota was up. It turns out that he asked for his release, and the Vikings granted it.

“Last week, Adam’s representation approached the team and asked if we would be willing to release Adam, expressing his desire to play a bigger role in the remaining weeks of what he has indicated will be his final NFL season. Following discussions through the weekend and out of respect for Adam, we have agreed to give him the opportunity to pursue more playing time elsewhere. Adam is one of the all-time great Vikings, and we wish him and his family continued success,” said general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah in a press release.

Thielen is competing in his final NFL season and wants to finish it with a chance to compete in the postseason.

Thielen played in 11 games for the Vikings over the season after they traded significant draft capital to acquire him in August. He caught just eight passes for 69 yards during his tenure. This is one of the biggest flops in the tenure of Adofo-Mensah.
