‘I took almost two pages of notes’ – One of the top coaches in college football reached out to new Vols baseball coach Josh Elander

New Tennessee Vols baseball coach Josh Elander is receiving advice from some elite minds in college sports.
Elander recently replaced Tony Vitello’s as Tennessee’s head baseball coach.
Vitello left Tennessee after eight seasons to take over as the manager of the San Francisco Giants.
One of the top coaches in college football reached out to new Vols baseball coach Josh Elander to offer advice
Elander joined Highway to Hoover this week and he revealed that Notre Dame Fighting Irish head coach Marcus Freeman reached out to him to offer some advice.
“I was actually able to connect with Marcus Freeman, the head football coach from Notre Dame,” said Elander. “And he was he was incredible — he went above and beyond. He actually sent me a PDF list of things that he wished he knew when he had just started. So that’s something that I have basically printed out and can go back to. But he was gracious with his time. And he had so many great things [to say]. I literally took almost two pages of notes when we talked. But the main thing was just be yourself — you don’t have to be some new persona or something like that. So that’s what I’ve tried to stay true to.”
Baseball and football may be two different sports, but coaching is coaching. And there are certainly ideas and approaches that translate.
Freeman’s advice to “be yourself” is elite advice. It sounds simple, but finding success is nearly impossible unless you stay true to who you are. That will be important for Elander as he fills the shoes left behind by one of the biggest personalities in college baseball.
Elander can’t try to be Tony Vitello, he just has to be the best version of Josh Elander.
