Rumors of Kalen DeBoer’s departure from the Alabama Crimson Tide just received a shot in the arm following surprise firing
Kalen DeBoer is going to be back at the forefront of coaching rumors following the firing of Sherrone Moore.
Just when you thought the craziest coaching carousel that college football had ever seen was over, it gets even crazier. Out of nowhere on Wednesday afternoon, one of college athletics’ most notable programs made a jaw-dropping move.
The Michigan Wolverines have relieved head coach Sherrone Moore of his duties, terminating his contract for cause after allegations of inappropriate conduct with a staff member. Now, one of the biggest jobs in America is open, and Alabama Crimson Tide HC Kalen DeBoer will be at the center stage all over again.
Kalen DeBoer to be a hot name in Michigan Wolverines coaching search
It may have flown under the radar because the Alabama Crimson Tide won the Iron Bowl, made the SEC Championship, and ultimately the College Football Playoff, but there was a lot of talk that DeBoer might leave Alabama and take the job as head coach of the Penn State Nittany Lions.
Well, Penn State found its coach shortly after DeBoer and the Tide made the SEC championship, all but assuring Alabama a spot in the CFB. Was the timing of that a coincidence? I think not.
In fact, if Alabama had lost the Iron Bowl, missed the SEC Championship, and the CFP, I would be willing to bet that DeBoer was a Nittany Lion right now. Instead, he leads the Crimson Tide in a rematch against the Oklahoma Sooners.
And maybe Alabama wins. Maybe they go on a run and win the whole damn thing, and this conversation is moot. But if it loses to Oklahoma again, and Michigan still hasn’t made a hire by next weekend, you better believe that DeBoer will be back in the mix, even if he denied any involvement with Penn State.
Kalen DeBoer heavily denied Penn State involvement
“We’re extremely happy at Alabama,” DeBoer said via the Alabama Crimson Tide YouTube channel. “We’re extremely happy here. Love the challenge, love the grind, love this place. And there’s never been any link. There’s never been any conversation. There’s never been any interest either way. And so, I’m glad we can put that to bed right now.”
I asked my partner at A to Z Sports Alabama, Josh Taylor, what he thinks of all this.
“The surprise firing of Sherrone Moore means that Michigan will have to scramble for a proper response to not only keep its 2026 recruiting class that JUST signed, and can ask for a release, but also to keep players from hitting the portal soon. A swing for DeBoer makes a ton of sense to the outside world because of his name and success, but I’d be shocked if there’s any serious interest from DeBoer’s side.
“Michigan will likely go for more of a legacy hire, and try to pry Jesse Minter back away from Harbaugh and the Los Angeles Chargers instead of wasting its time going after DeBoer, who already turned down Penn State rumors with conviction.” – Taylor
The next two weeks are about to be even crazier for Alabama.
