The Tennessee Vols and the Illinois Fighting Illini will meet in the Music City Bowl on Dec. 30 in Nashville.

This will be the first-ever matchup between the two schools, and it’ll be the Vols’ fourth appearance in the Music City Bowl.

Tennessee is trying to swipe a 2027 quarterback from Illinois

Tennessee got the competition with Illinois started a bit early this week.

According to On3’s Greg Biggins, the Volunteers offered 2027 four-star quarterback Kamden Lopati on Wednesday.

Lopati has been committed to Illinois since late July.

“I had a good conversation with coach Heupel and coach Halzle,” said Lopati to On3. “With Tennessee being in the SEC, I’m definitely curious about them and want to learn more about their program.”

Lopati, 6-3, 215 pounds from Salt Lake City, UT, is rated in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 14 quarterback in the nation and the No. 3 player in the state of Utah.

“He has a linebacker build but is all quarterback and one of the best pure throwers in the region,” wrote Biggins in his scouting report of Lopati last summer. “For his size, he moves well and shows some real dual-threat ability. Threw for over 3,000 yards and 30 touchdowns as a sophomore with just four interceptions and does a nice job protecting the football, while still taking his shots in the vertical passing game. Moves well in the pocket and shows the quickness to get outside and elude the rush and throws very well on the run….His arm talent is what jumps out and what separates him.”

Tennessee hasn’t zeroed in on a top quarterback target in the 2027 recruiting class — the Vols have offered nine other 2027 quarterbacks, according to 247Sports — but it’s easy to see why they’re interested in Lopati based on Biggins’ scouting report.
