Bills hit with some potential nightmare injury news as Sean McDermott provides critical update moments after loss to the Eagles
Head coach Sean McDermott gave fans a big reason to be concerned about defensive tackle Ed Oliver.
The Buffalo Bills were a Josh Allen completion away from securing the comeback win over the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 17. The team came up just short in the closing moments, falling 12-13.
Allen fully understands he needs to be better, something that he explained in his postgame press conference and something that head coach Sean McDermott shared with his own words. At the end of the day, though, you put the ball in No. 17’s hands and hope for the best. More often than not, he comes through in a big way, but not against the Eagles.
McDermott provides injury update on Ed Oliver
To make matters worse, McDermott opened up on defensive tackle Ed Oliver and his injury status, as the team is just a few short weeks from the playoffs. Needless to say, Bills Mafia won’t be too fond of his messaging.
“Nothing that I can talk about right now, I think he’s moving in a good direction,” McDermott said. “But, you know a little bit of a, call it a setback, this past week, maybe. I don’t know if it’s going to affect his timeline or not. I don’t know enough yet. That’s all I have for you right now. If and when I get something more, I’ll get back to you.”
A setback is the last thing the fanbase wanted to hear, and it’s something that’s come up even ahead of the Eagles game with star tight end Dalton Kincaid. The team just cannot stay healthy, and repeatedly has seen players hit a setback that has forced them to miss more time.
The worst possible timing for the update
While fans were gearing up to see a potential Oliver return, they’ll have to wait for more information from the front office. Oliver had been battling through injuries all season before tearing his biceps and being ruled out indefinitely. In Week 1 against the Baltimore Ravens, he was a one-man wrecking crew, getting a forced fumble on running back Derrick Henry at a pivotal point of the matchup and adding a sack on the elusive quarterback Lamar Jackson.
His presence can immediately be felt on the defensive line, a position that’s been ravaged with injuries this season. Getting him back for the playoffs would be a huge boost, but it’s yet to be determined just when Oliver might be back with the organization this season.
If there’s a silver lining, it’s that Buffalo still has time, though barely, to get healthy before the games truly start to matter. With each vague update and setback pushes clarity further down the road, the margin for error continues to shrink.
The Bills don’t just need answers on Ed Oliver; they need him on the field. Until that happens, all the fans can do is wait, hope, and watch the team try to survive long enough for reinforcements to arrive.
