Kansas City Chiefs reinforce practice squad roster depth for final week of 2025 NFL season with pair of new defensive signings
The Kansas City Chiefs added some fresh faces on the defensive side of the ball on Tuesday.
The Kansas City Chiefs have filled a pair of vacancies on their practice squad after recent roster moves had left it depleted.
The Chiefs recently promoted CB Melvin Smith, DE Ethan Downs, DE Tyreke Smith, DT Zacch Pickens, OT Chu Godrick, QB Chris Oladokun, and S Mike Edwards from the practice squad with corresponding moves placing star players like Patrick Mahomes, Rashee Rice, Leo Chenal, Trent McDuffie, Jaylen Watson, and others on injured reserve. It left the team with little depth for its upcoming Week 18 game against the Las Vegas Raiders.
According to the NFL’s personnel notice for Tuesday, Dec. 30, the Chiefs signed two defensive players to the practice squad. This brings their total player count up to 12 of 16 possible players on the practice squad.
Chiefs sign DT Marcus Harris and LB Kam Arnold to the practice squad ahead of Week 18 vs. Raiders
The Chiefs recently hosted over a dozen players for tryouts, including DT Marcus Harris, whom they signed to the practice squad on Tuesday.
Harris is a former seventh-round 2024 NFL Draft pick out of Auburn/Kansas by the Houston Texans. He’s spent time with a few different clubs over the past two seasons in the league, mainly on the practice squad with the Texans and New England Patriots. Listed at 6-foot-3 and 286 pounds, Harris recorded 126 total tackles, 31.5 tackles for loss, and 11.5 sacks during his collegiate career.
As for Kam Arnold, he went undrafted in the 2025 NFL Draft and signed with the Washington Commanders. He’s listed at 6-foot-1 and 228 pounds, recording 257 total tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, three interceptions, nine passes defended, four forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery in five seasons and 55 games played with Boston College.

These moves likely signal the Chiefs’ intention to sign both players to reserve/future deals once the 2025 NFL season ends, unless something happens in the next week that dissuades them from those decisions. Keep in mind that Kansas City has had a lot of players in for tryouts over the past two weeks, and several of those players or others like them could at least occupy spots on the 90-man offseason roster until free agency and after the 2026 NFL Draft.
