One of the transfer quarterbacks that would make a lot of sense for Tennessee is TCU transfer quarterback Josh Hoover.
The offense that Hoover played in at TCU under offensive coordinator Kendal Briles is similar to the offense that Josh Heupel runs at Tennessee.
ESPN’s Pete Thamel, however, detailed three programs to watch for Hoover on Thursday, and Tennessee wasn’t one of the schools that he mentioned.
Thamel mentioned Indiana, Kentucky, and Louisville as the top schools to watch for Hoover.
“The final domino that will unfold on the grass behind me today is Fernando Mendoza,” said Thamel. “The widespread expectation in the NFL is that Mendoza is going to go pro after the season. He obviously just won the Heisman Trophy. To replace him, I’ve been told Indiana is expected to target Josh Hoover, the former TCU quarterback…Also in the market for Hoover are Louisville and Kentucky.”
Transfer decisions are fluid, so things could certainly change for Hoover. But for now, it doesn’t sound like the Vols are going to be a big factor in this transfer recruitment.
How much is Josh Hoover expected to cost as a transfer addition?
Hoover isn’t much of a runner — he has -10 career rushing yards — so that might be why the Vols aren’t believed to be in the mix for the Texas native.
ESPN’s Max Olson, by the way, suggested on Monday that Hoover could land a deal worth more than $3 million.
“Hoover has played a lot of winning football and is another proven veteran QB who’s likely to fetch more than $3 million on his next deal,” wrote Olson.
VolQuest’s Austin Price said earlier this week that he thinks Tennessee is prepared to spend in the $3 to $4 million range for a transfer quarterback, so it’s not like Hoover is out of the Vols’ price range (at least for now).
The transfer nuggets and intel should heat up on Friday once the portal officially opens.
