A former Tennessee Vols commit is reportedly entering the NCAA transfer portal.
On3’s Hayes Fawcett reported on Thursday that USF tight end Jonathan Echols is planning to enter the transfer portal when it opens on Jan. 2.
Echols, 6-foot-6/235 pounds from Franklin, GA, is a former four-star recruit who was committed to Tennessee for over a year.
Echols caught 10 passes for 168 yards and four touchdowns during his time at USF.
Auburn makes the most sense for Jonathan Echols
Echols committed to the Vols on July 4, 2022. He decommitted from Tennessee on December 8, 2023 and flipped to USF.
Former Vols offensive coordinator Alex Golesh was head coach at USF when Echols flipped. Golesh was recently hired as the new head coach at Auburn.
It would make sense for Echols to follow Golesh to Auburn — especially considering the mass exodus of players the Tigers have experienced over the last couple of weeks.
Echols would obviously be a good fit in the Vols’ offense, but Tennessee likely won’t be in the market for a transfer tight end this offseason with Ethan Davis, Jack Van Dorselaer, and DaSaahn Brame set to return to Rocky Top in 2026.
