Ole Miss Rebels head coach had nothing but a powerful message regarding the Sooners during SEC play
The Sooners men’s basketball team is starting SEC play off 1-0 after beating Ole Miss.
On Saturday, the Oklahoma Sooners won their first SEC conference game of the season. OU is now 11-3 on the year, 1-0 in conference play, and looking like they’re improving every single game. After beating the Ole Miss Rebels 86-70, the opposing team’s coach couldn’t help but share a powerful message about the OU Men’s Basketball team that should make fans pretty excited.
“I think this team has a chance to write its own story,” Ole Miss head coach Chris Beard told reporters regarding this Oklahoma team.
Not many expected big things from this team entering this season. No one is saying that they’re going to win it all; however, even Beard seems surprised by what’s happened so far.
How the Sooners can continue to make a push to the tourney
Oklahoma looked great against Ole Miss. However, it’s worth mentioning just how bad that team is. Sure, coming into the game, the Rebels had just four losses, but conference play is just now starting. The Rebels don’t seem like a team that is going to be making it deep in the tournament, if they make it at all.
If OU wants to be that type of team, they have to fix some things. The three-point shooting has to be better. In this game, it was a two-point lead at the half solely because the shooting from beyond the arc was as bad as it was. They were shooting 35% from three at half, while Mississippi was shooting 60% on 9/15 shooting. OU was letting OM shoot whatever they wanted from deep while the Sooners struggled to hit.
Of course, things came back down to earth. OU ended up shooting a better percentage from deep than Ole Miss, while also shooting 52% from the field, and holding the Rebels to 39%.
Oklahoma also has to work on limiting its opponents on the offensive glass. They were out-rebounded in that department by one, to a team that really doesn’t have the same size they do. That’s going to be worse against other teams that have better size than they do. Teams like the Florida Gators, Georgia Bulldogs, Tennessee Volunteers, and the Alabama Crimson Tide are all better rebounding teams. OU is tenth in the SEC.
There’s more than that to fix, but the Sooners have already begun to put some pieces together to show they have some pretty big potential as a team. They can, as Beard said, write their own story.
