NFL insider gives an optmistic update on the Lions’ pursuit of Mike McDaniel
Very good news if you’re hoping McDaniel comes to Detroit
The Detroit Lions are actively looking for their next offensive coordinator, and as we type this sentence, they’re at five candidates. But the one that Lions fans want more than any of them is former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel. The problem is that McDaniel has a ton of suitors right now for head coach jobs, and now he’s taking another interview for an OC gig with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The expectation has been that he probably wants a head coach job, but Fox Sports’ Greg Auman says that’s not the case.
NFL Insider Greg Auman reports Mike McDaniel “would consider a great OC opportunity better than a not-great head coaching vacancy”
I don’t know if anyone has noticed, but there are;t a lot of great head coaching opportunities out there right now. Pretty much the Baltimore Ravens, and that is it. You might say the Pittsburgh Steelers, but that is a team without a quarterback and in a bad place to find their next one. The Cleveland Browns and Tennessee Titans are major risks, the Arizona Cardinals are starting over at quarterback, the Atlanta Falcons are not horrible, but they also need a quarterback, and then there’s the New York Giants, who are probably about to hire John Harbaugh any day now.
The Lions’ job is just too good to pass up at this point. They have the MVP-level quarterback, the crazy good running back, an All-Pro receiver, the super fast weapon, the best tackle in the game, and the All-Pro tight end. Come to Detroit, have the number one offense, and maybe you’re taking over Joe Burrow in 2026, or maybe Andy Reid retires, and you’re the Chiefs’ next head coach. I would just not sell out for any of these jobs right now. But that’s me. I’m not Mike McDaniel. Only he can make that choice. We’ll see what happens.
