The Las Vegas Raiders are doing the same thing this time of year that they were doing this time last year, and really the year before that. They’ve been doing this whole head coach search thing for a while now, trying to find the perfect one. There’s a belief that a guy like Mike McDaniel, the former Miami Dolphins head coach, could be that guy.

This upcoming Monday, the Raiders will interview him in Miami, where Tom Brady and some of the Raiders’ brass will be to watch the National Championship game. It also helps that McDaniel currently lives in Miami.

McDaniel would be a great fit with the Raiders

The Raiders need a young, innovative head coach in today’s NFL. They need someone who can adapt and be around for a long time. They haven’t had that in a very, very long time.

Their last head coach, who lasted more than a season and a half, was Jon Gruden, and he was fired at the start of his fourth season. Even when things go rough in the first few seasons, they need someone who can build a program and get guys on board. That seems like a job for McDaniel.

You can’t keep going back to these older guys who have been phased out of the game for a reason. McDaniel is known as one of the brightest minds in football. While it didn’t end great in Miami, he’s still looked at as a coach everyone wants. If the Raiders can land him, or a guy like Los Angeles Rams passing game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase, someone young and up and coming, that would be the best thing for their franchise.

You don’t have to go and get the older guys like John Harbaugh, who’s now the New York Giants head coach, or Mike Tomlin. You can get McDaniel, who never had a competent GM in his front office, and didn’t have the best situation around him. It won’t be great to start with LV either, but it can certainly get there.
