Sean Payton just got as petty as it gets towards any Bills or NFL fans claiming the officiating was wrong on the final interception play
The Broncos beat the Bills fair and square.
The Denver Broncos punched their ticket to the AFC Championship by defeating the Buffalo Bills. However, what would the NFL be if there weren’t any drama? Just because the Kansas City Chiefs are no longer in the postseason doesn’t mean there won’t be fans talking about the refs or the game being rigged. The Buffalo Bills fans have already done plenty of that, and in a way, Bills HC Sean McDermott has, too.
Late in overtime, with the Bills having a chance to win, Buffalo QB Josh Allen threw an interception. The ball first appeared to be caught by WR Brandin Cooks, but he lost control as he hit the ground. McMillian then grabbed the ball before either player’s knees or elbows touched the ground. The play was ruled an interception by the Broncos. Bills fans and their team were upset by the call, while Broncos head coach Sean Payton saw it differently and responded with pointed remarks.
“Fantastic,” Payton said when asked his thoughts on the interception. “The last one. Yes, perfect. Two things happened. There’s actually a hold in the end zone. That would’ve been the first time the game would’ve ended with a safety. When [DT] D.J. [Jones] just gets completely [held], but the throw is made, the catch is being made, but the catch isn’t secured. So in these playoff games, you have officials. If the catch was secured, it wouldn’t have been an interception. So, as it’s not secured and we get it, it’s our ball. It was an amazing play by ‘J-Mac’ (CB Ja’Quan McMillian).”
Payton can pull up the receipts like fans do if anyone wants to go that route.
Bills put themselves in a situation that allowed the game to be too close anyway
Being a referee is very hard, and most people realize that. However, when you lose, you don’t have to instantly attack them. Maybe sometimes it’s actually your team’s fault for even being in that situation in the first place. For the Bills, had they not had five turnovers, several in their own territory, they wouldn’t be talking about it.
Going into the game, many considered the Bills the favorite to win it all. And honestly, without any major QB threat like Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes, Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow, or Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson, he should have been. However, Allen’s four turnovers led the Bills to overtime, where the outcome hinged on a 50/50 throw.
You can make a case that there’s a penalty called every single snap. If you don’t want a game to be decided by a call a ref has to make, don’t let it get to that. There was probably a hold on that play, anyway.
