The Tennessee Vols are ranked in the top 25 of On3’s early 2026 college football rankings.

Despite the fact that rosters are still being finalized and the 2026 versions of college football teams haven’t practiced yet, On3 released its early 2026 top 25 rankings on Monday.

Where Tennessee falls in On3’s early 2026 top 25 college football rankings

On3’s early top 25 rankings have the Volunteers at No. 20.

“Why is Tennessee in the top 25? That’s a fair question, but Josh Heupel has shown throughout his tenure with the Volunteers that this team will overachieve,” noted On3’s Ari Wasserman. “Right now, it seems highly unlikely that quarterback Joey Aguilar will be back next season, which raises the biggest question — who will play quarterback? Also, Jim Knowles takes over as defensive coordinator, and his defense typically takes more than a year for players to fully adapt to. That said, Tennessee will probably find a way to be ranked in this area next November.”

While I don’t love the idea of ranking teams before we’ve even seen them practice, I think this is probably fair for the Vols. Regardless of what the roster looks like, Josh Heupel has shown at Tennessee that he’s going to have a top 25 caliber team annually. And I’d expect 2026 to be no different.
