Colts fans may not like it, but a controversial decision by the team looks smarter as each day passes
The Colts faced a lot of criticism when they chose to keep Shane Steichen as their head coach for another season, but it’s already looking like the team was right after all.
The Indianapolis Colts’ decision to keep head coach Shane Steichen and general manager Chris Ballard for another season was met with understandable frustration from the fan base.
The team lost seven straight games to end the year, ultimately sinking what had appeared to be a season full of potential. A collapse like that typically leads to a team firing at least one of its head coach or general manager, and fans were unhappy to see the Colts not react that way.
Ballard should have been relieved of his duties if you ask me, but I never felt that firing Steichen was in the Colts’ best interests. How things have unfolded in the NFL since the regular season ended has all but confirmed that the Colts were at least right to keep Steichen.
If the Colts had fired Shane Stiechen, it could have been a disaster
Ten NFL teams have been searching for a new head coach since the regular season ended — a massive number of openings making for an incredibly competitive market. If the Colts had fired Steichen, they would have been competing with those other 10 teams for the best candidates.
It’s a competition that would not have gone well for them if you ask me. The Colts have a massive question mark at the most important position in football: quarterback.
That itself is a very tough sell for a candidate who would have had 10 other options to consider, especially when Indianapolis doesn’t have its first-round pick for the next two years, even to try to land a QB in the NFL Draft.
The Colts would have been bound to hear a lot of nos before someone accepted the job. I also believe Steichen would have landed one of the other 10 jobs, increasing the likelihood that the Colts would look foolish for being so impatient with him at the helm.
The Colts have certainly made some mistakes recently, but keeping Steichen sure isn’t one of them.
