Steelers may suddenly lose one of the franchise’s most important members when they need him most following latest NFL news
The Steelers could be without a key member of the front office going forward.
While the Pittsburgh Steelers are only a week into their head coaching search, with the season in the rearview and the Senior Bowl next week, NFL Draft season is officially upon us. In a matter of months, the draft community will arrive in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where the Steelers hold the 21st overall pick.
Well, alongside Omar Khan and the scouting department, there is one man who has been influential in acquiring draft talent for the Pittsburgh Steelers, and one team down south has taken notice.
Atlanta Falcons to interview Steelers assistant GM Andy Weidl for GM opening
“Steelers assistant general manager Andy Weidl will interview for the open general manager position with the Atlanta Falcons, according to sources. Weidl has been with the Steelers since May of 2022 and is a well-respected personnel evaluator around league circles.” – Mark Kaboly, Pat McAfee Show
Weidl and Khan have known each other for over two decades, dating back to their time with the New Orleans Saints. Weidl took the Pittsburgh job in 2022 after spending time learning under Philadelphia Eagles GM Howie Roseman, and you can see that imprint in the Steelers roster.
Pittsburgh has attacked the trenches hard over the last three drafts, with first-round picks that include Broderick Jones, Troy Fautanu, and Derrick Harmon. The Steelers also used second-round draft capital on Keeanu Benton, have drafted length at corner with players like Joey Porter Jr. and Cory Trice, and they have built up their reserves with depth pieces like Jack Sawyer, Yahya Black, and Will Howard.
Those are all positions and traits coveted by Philadelphia’s front office. It feels like it’s only a matter of time before Weidl lands a general manager job, and with Kevin Stefanski in place in Atlanta, it makes sense that he would want a name that I’m sure comes with a high recommendation from Mike Tomlin, with whom Stefanski has a friendship dating back to their time with the Minnesota Vikings.
Needless to say, Weidl would be a major loss when it comes to scouting talent in Pittsburgh, and the Steelers should do whatever it takes to keep him.
