The Tennessee Vols are hosting an interesting in-state transfer player on a visit this week.
According to multiple reports, the Vols are hosting UT-Martin transfer tight end Drake Martinez on a visit on Wednesday and Thursday.
Martinez, 6-foot-3/245 pounds from Houston, TX, has caught 36 passes for 305 yards and four touchdowns over the last two seasons.
The former three-star recruit was rated as the No. 91 tight end in the 2021 recruiting class.
How would Drake Martinez fit with Tennessee?
It’s a bit of a surprise that Tennessee is pursuing another tight end. Ethan Davis and DaSaahn Brame will operate as the Vols’ top two tight ends in 2026.
Tennessee also landed South Alabama transfer tight end Trent Thomas earlier this month (following the loss of tight end Jack Van Dorselaer to the transfer portal).
The Vols are likely just looking for added depth. Tennessee, after all, used more three tight end sets last season, often using a backup defensive lineman as a tight end/fullback. Adding Martinez would give the Vols another true tight end option to use in those sets.
Depth isn’t a sexy word in college football, but elite depth can be the difference in winning a national championship and missing the College Football Playoff.
