Eric Bieniemy’s hiring as the Kansas City Chiefs’ OC appears nearly finalized, exciting players, especially Patrick Mahomes.

Of all factors in a staff change, the QB-OC relationship is paramount. Mahomes and Bieniemy have a strong rapport, as he did with Matt Nagy. On Wednesday, Mahomes publicly supported the Bieniemy hire via his Instagram story.

The Chiefs made the right choice by selecting someone who shares Mahomes’s mentality and already has established chemistry with him. With Bieniemy, the Chiefs get an OC familiar with the system and terminology Mahomes uses, requiring no additional learning curve.

Everything to keep in mind with the Chiefs’ hiring Bieniemy as OC

It’s important to remember that the OC isn’t as important in KC as it is with other teams. With some teams, the OC is the play-caller and scheme designer. With the Chiefs, Andy Reid pretty much does all of that. That’s not to say Bieniemy and Nagy haven’t had any say. But we all know Reid is calling the shots on that side of the ball. Whatever Reid wants to do is what’s going to happen.

Bieniemy’s goal isn’t to fix Reid’s offense by calling different plays or overhauling the scheme. Instead, the former Chiefs OC and RB coach will contribute ideas to enhance the system, prioritize holding the team accountable, and try to fix the run game. Accountability stands out as Bieniemy’s hallmark — he tells players when performance doesn’t meet Chiefs’ standards.

The players who have played for Bieniemy before love that about him — his willingness to get on to players and not caudle them. As Travis Kelce has said, he’s also the player’s biggest supporter, too. Fans wanted something new, and that makes sense. However, the best offensive years of the dynasty came with Bieniemy as the OC, so why not try something out that worked before?

Mahomes is obviously excited.
