NFL insider drops explosive statements about Buffalo’s coaching search and Sean McDermott’s future
Things will look a lot different at One Bills Drive in 2026. The offseason has only just begun.
The Buffalo Bills have moved on from Sean McDermott, and it appears McDermott has moved on from coaching in the NFL, at least for now.
NFL insider Ian Rapoport shared an update on McDermott’s plans in the league. During his nine-year run, he completely turned the franchise around, making it a powerhouse. While McDermott couldn’t bring the city its first-ever championship, he changed what it meant to be a member of the Buffalo Bills.
Sean McDermott might be taking a year off from football
The latest report indicates that McDermott might be done, at least for one season. With only the Arizona Cardinals, Cleveland Browns, Las Vegas Raiders, and Buffalo Bills having job openings, he’s wise to perhaps wait a season and see how the landscape of the NFL unfolds.
“Remains unclear what Sean McDermott will firmly decide to do, but to my knowledge, has not engaged on any of these openings. But I believe it is likely he ends up taking a year off,” Rapaport said.
Some of the Bills’ plans may have leaked, with Rapopot sharing an update on the recent decision to bring in former Indianapolis Colts quarterback Philip Rivers. While Rivers has since dropped out of the official running, the sentiment remains the same. Rivers should be considered a top coaching candidate in the league, even if it doesn’t materialize into anything this season.
Don’t sleep on the idea of Philip Rivers coming to Buffalo
The decision to bring in the former quarterback came with some scrutiny, but make no mistake, he was a very real option before dropping out. Rivers and quarterback Josh Allen share the same agent, making sense for Rivers to come in at some capacity.
“It is real. It is not a joke,” Rapoport said.
While it’s no longer for the head coaching position, the team might be targeting Rivers for a separate role. He’s looking to get his foot in the door after a successful career in the league, and Buffalo may be his next step.
If I were a betting man, his potential next position would be somewhere in the quarterbacks’ room to continue to mold and help Allen reach his full potential. Honestly, just getting him anywhere in the building would be a fun addition to a regime that’ll have sweeping changes. With a new head coach coming in, there’s going to most likely be a lot of turnover.
Whether it’s as a head coach or in a more behind-the-scenes role, the Bills are clearly turning over every stone possible, as general manager Brandon Beane alluded to in the most recent press conference. They’re trying to reshape the organization around Allen.
With McDermott likely stepping away for a year and Buffalo bringing in unconventional names like Rivers, one thing is clear: this search is anything but business as usual.
As Rapoport made it clear, what’s unfolding in Buffalo right now is very real, and it’s only getting started. Buckle up, Bills Mafia, the offseason has just begun.
