The Tennessee Vols won an exciting game against the Georgia Bulldogs in Athens on Wednesday night.

Tennessee out-rebounded Georgia 52-27, but the Vols needed overtime to earn an 86-85 win.

Tennessee athletic director Danny White reacts to the win over Georgia

The Vols’ annual basketball matchup against Georgia is particularly meaningful for Tennessee athletic director Danny White.

That’s because Georgia is coached by Danny’s older brother, Mike White.

Danny, who was in Athens for the game, reacted to the Vols’ win over his brother and the Bulldogs on Thursday during an appearance on The Mike Keith Show.

“We call it the awkward bowl,” said the younger White. “We don’t like playing each other.”

When Keith pointed out that Danny looked pretty happy after the win — despite it coming against his brother — Tennessee’s athletic director quickly noted that he’s “always happy to win”.

“On a night when we were a little bit short handed with not having Troy (Henderson) and probably didn’t shoot it as well as we can — both from the field and from the foul line — we still came out victorious against a really good team who I thought played really well,” added Danny. “I thought that was a continued growing moment for our team, as we’re figuring out how to play with each other. And a lot of our young guys are figuring out how to play college basketball at an elite level. So we’re growing at the right time, as you’d expect a Rick Barnes team to do.”

Keith followed up on the awkwardness of Tennessee beating Mike White and Georgia by asking Danny about the family dynamic when the Vols and Bulldogs get together.

“That’s why we call it the awkward bowl,” replied Danny. “Our family text thread when Tennessee plays Georgia, it goes silent.”

The good news for the White family is that Tennessee and Georgia aren’t scheduled to play again this season — though they could meet in the SEC Tournament or the NCAA Tournament.
