Kint Kubiak just took the perfect approach in hiring one of the more underappreciated coaching positions in the NFL
Klint Kubiak is putting together a good staff.
The Las Vegas Raiders have started assembling their coaching staff, with the search for an offensive coordinator still underway as Klint Kubiak appoints his special teams coordinator.
According to Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports, the Raiders are expected to hire South Carolina’s Joe DeCamillis as special teams coordinator. DeCamillis also worked at Texas in 2023. Kubiak is bringing experience to help the first-time head coach, as DeCamillis was an NFL special teams coach for 31 years.
The Raiders need as much help as they can get in terms of experience on the coaching staff. It’s valuable in this situation. Kubiak has NFL coaching experience, as he’s been in the league in some capacity since 2013 with the Minnesota Vikings, Denver Broncos, San Francisco 49ers, New Orleans Saints, and, of course, the Seattle Seahawks last season. But, as a first-year head coach, he will need help. There will be growing pains and tough situations, and Kubiak will need those close to him for help.
Who is Joe DeCamillis?
In 2024 DeCamillis joined the South Carolina Gamecocks as associate head coach and special teams coordinator under head coach Shane Beamer, bringing his NFL-honed skills to elevate the program’s special teams unit. During his time in Columbia, DeCamillis improved South Carolina’s kick returns and punt coverage, and now he’s bringing some of that to the desert.
DeCamillis began his NFL tenure in 1991 with the Denver Broncos and has since served as a special teams coach or coordinator for eight NFL franchises, including the New York Giants, Atlanta Falcons, Jacksonville Jaguars, Dallas Cowboys, Chicago Bears, Denver Broncos, and Rams. He is known for winning Super Bowl 50 with the Broncos and Super Bowl LVI with the Rams.
Before South Carolina, he spent the 2023 season at the University of Texas as a special assistant to head coach Steve Sarkisian. This role marked his first foray into the collegiate level after decades in the NFL. DeCamillis has strong ties to the Kubiak coaching family, so the fit makes sense.
