The Tennessee Vols made some big-time moves in the NCAA transfer portal this offseason.

Tennessee added 21 transfer additions, which is by far the most transfers the Vols have added in the portal era (UT had never signed more than nine transfers in a single cycle before this offseason).

12 of those transfer additions came on the defensive side of the ball.

ESPN names Tennessee’s best transfer addition

ESPN’s Max Olson recently named the best portal addition for each top 25 college football team.

Olson went with Penn State transfer EDGE Chaz Coleman as the top addition for the Volunteers.

“Coleman, the No. 4 edge in ESPN’s transfer rankings, played only 144 snaps in his true freshman season at Penn State but flashed big-time potential with 12 pressures, three TFLs and a strip sack against Florida International that he returned 39 yards,” wrote Olson. “He had to put on 25 pounds during his first offseason with the Nittany Lions to get up to 250. Now it’s time to take a step in his development and prove he can become a three-down player in the SEC. The Vols brought in his DC Jim Knowles and three more Penn State defenders in Xavier Gilliam, Amare Campbell and Dejuan Lane this offseason, which should make the transition to SEC ball even smoother for a talented young pass rusher whose best football should be ahead of him.”

Coleman already knows new Vols defensive coordinator Jim Knowles’ scheme, so he should be able to hit the ground running at Tennessee.

“He’s crazy athletic, explosive,” said Knowles of Coleman in August. “For a freshman, he plays really hard. Like he plays to the echo of the whistle, chases the ball all over the place. I call him the Chazmanian Devil.”

Coleman will instantly be Tennessee’s top pass rusher.
