Mario Jeberaeel, a former defensive assistant with the Jacksonville Jaguars, will now help Ashton Jeanty elevate his game with the Las Vegas Raiders. He was hired on Sunday as the offensive run game coordinator. There is one issue: he has never coached the position and is actually a defensive coach. Well, kind of.

Who is the Raiders’ new offensive run coordinator, Mario Jeberaeel?

Jeberaeel is a Las Vegas native. He played for UNLV as an offensive lineman, starting as a walk-on. He made 36 appearances over four seasons. His coaching career began at the college level. He served as offensive line coach at Nicholls State University, the University of Arkansas at Monticello, and Abilene Christian University.

He transitioned to the NFL through a diversity coaching internship with the Atlanta Falcons in 2021. There, he mainly worked with the offensive line. He was then promoted to assistant offensive line coach. In 2024, he joined the Jaguars as an assistant outside linebackers coach. Jebereel’s return to the offensive side of the ball is kind of seen as a swing by the Raiders. He’s never coached this position, but does have offensive line experience. However, over the last five years, really, he’s worked on the defensive side of the ball in the NFL.

None of this means he will be bad or good at his job. We won’t really know until halfway through the season whether he is someone we should attribute the successes or even failures of the run game to. But, he’s going to get to design run schemes and plays for one of the best young running backs in the league. Ashton Jeanty, who finished with just under 1,000 rushing yards as a rookie on the worst running team and worst offense in the league last year, could take his game to the next level.

Jeanty is special, so this hire is important. Now, did they get it right? We will have to wait and see.
