The New York Jets have plenty of difficult decisions this offseason. They’re sticking with head coach Aaron Glenn, albeit with a new coaching staff surrounding him. Breece Hall’s future has been a topic of discussion since the season.

Now, we have a bit more clarity on the impressive running back’s future in New York. The Jets value him but plan to play it by ear – to a degree, with Hall.

Breece Hall won’t hit NFL free agency

According to Jets GM Darren Mougey, Hall will be tagged this offseason if New York does not sign him to a long-term extension. Using the franchise tag on Hall takes him completely off the market for other teams.

The transition tag would allow the running back to get offers from other teams, but the Jets would have the right to match any offer he receives.

“Ideally, we’d find a way to get a deal done and keep Breece around,” Mougey detailed during media availability at the NFL Scouting Combine. “I’ve said that for the past year since I got here. Breece is a good player, and we want to find a way to keep him around.

“We’ve been going through that process and are still doing so. We have a week to find out, if we can’t get to an agreement, which way we’ll go with the tag.”

The Jets reportedly had offers on the table at last year’s deadline for the running back but held onto him. To the chagrin of many teams, that reality seems to be occurring once again this offseason. Even though there will be interest from other orgs, the Jets don’t want him wearing a different uniform in 2026.

We will see how all of this plays out for both Hall and the Jets as free agency unfolds in March. The deadline for applying a tag is March 3rd.
