Former Vols cornerback Colton Hood clarifies his stance on Colorado head coach Deion Sanders following comments at the NFL combine
Deion Sanders was Colton Hood’s head coach before the cornerback transferred to Tennessee.
Former Tennessee Vols cornerback Colton Hood took to Twitter/X.com Thursday to clarify his stance on Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders.
Hood, who started his college career at Auburn, played at Colorado under Sanders in 2024 before transferring to Tennessee.
The former Vol was asked Thursday morning at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis about the differences in playing for Sanders and Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel.
“I won’t really get into the differences,” said Hood. “I would say, at Tennessee, Coach Heupel, he definitely cared about his players. So he definitely did the best to keep us healthy and get to Saturday. He did a great job with that. Just a great coach, a player’s coach. I love Coach Heupel.”
Some fans and media took those comments as a shot at Sanders, even though Hood also spoke positively about his time at Colorado.
“The best thing I learned from him was just how intensely you need to study film to be the best version of yourself and how it can make me a great player,” said Hood of what he learned from Sanders.
“It was definitely a great experience,” added Hood of his time at Colorado. “Just getting to be around all the NFL talent there, and going against Travis Hunter every day. We had four NFL receivers on that team.”

Shortly after speaking to the media, Hood tweeted that he wasn’t throwing shade at Sanders or Colorado.
“By no means was I throwing shade at Colorado or Coach Prime,” tweeted Hood. “I said before [answering that] I wouldn’t get into differences (between coaches) and proceeded to only talk about my previous school as I assumed that was the best way to go about answering the question.”
It seems clear that Hood meant no disrespect at all toward Sanders or the Colorado football program.
