Tennessee Vols head coach Josh Heupel is in favor of bringing a change to college football that not everyone wants.
Heupel recently gave a rare offseason interview to On3’s Chris Low and shared his opinion on one of college football’s most polarizing topics — College Football Playoff expansion.
Josh Heupel shares his stance on a 24-team playoff
The College Football Playoff will remain at 12 teams for the 2026 season, but change could be on the horizon.
Some folks in the sport, including the Big 10, want to see a 24-team College Football Playoff.
Not everyone, however, wants to see the tournament double in size.
Popular college football talk show host Josh Pate, for example, is among those who believe that expansion is unnecessary.
Heupel, on the other hand, told On3 that he’d like to see the playoff expand to 24 teams.
“The way college football is constantly changing, that probably makes the most sense,” said Heupel of a 24-team playoff.
I’m on the same page as Heupel on this one.
I think the 24-team playoff would eliminate, for the most part, one of the most annoying things about college football right now — the playoff debates that completely dominate the month of November.
A 24-team playoff would mean that nearly every top 25 team would be getting in. There would be no more tough decisions made between 9-3 Texas, 10-2 Notre Dame, 10-2 Vanderbilt, or 10-2 Miami like we saw last season when only one of those teams could get in. And the team that got in, Miami, reached the championship game. Who’s to say that the same wouldn’t have been true for Texas, Notre Dame, or Vanderbilt?
The arguments for each of those programs made sense, but only one could get in.
And sure, there would be arguments for the last team left out in a 24-team playoff that make sense, but I don’t think choosing which 8-4 team to leave out is quite as big of a deal.
I think Heupel is spot on with this take. And I bet it won’t be long before he gets his wish.
