The Denver Broncos reportedly had a big influence on another NFL team’s franchise tag decision
The Denver Broncos influenced the way another team chose to use the franchise tag.
NFL free agency hasn’t started yet, but the Denver Broncos are already making a big impact on the market.
It’s no secret that one of the Broncos’ objectives this offseason is to add a premier running back to their roster.
Denver’s desire to land a running back reportedly influenced a franchise tag decision that was made on Tuesday.
The Broncos’ influenced the Jets’ decision to place the franchise tag on running back Breece Hall
The New York Jets announced Tuesday that they’re placing the non-exclusive franchise tag on running back Breece Hall.
Hall, who will turn 25 in May, is coming off the best season of his career — 1,065 rushing yards, four rushing touchdowns, 350 receiving yards, and one receiving touchdown.
According to CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones, the Broncos’ plan to add a running back in free agency is why the Jets used the franchise tag on Hall instead of the transition tag.
“The Broncos are poised to make a splash at running back next week,” wrote Jones. “Denver is the reason why the Jets used the franchise tag on Breece Hall rather than the transition tag, according to sources, making sure Denver wouldn’t get the opportunity to put together an offer the Jets would refuse to match. A few connections there underline that tango: Jets GM Darren Mougey came from Denver, while Broncos running backs coach Louis Ayeni identified Hall as a high school prospect years ago and recruited him to Iowa State before Ayeni left Ames for Northwestern and eventually the NFL.”
Denver would have to give the Jets two first round picks to sign Hall, which is obviously unlikely to happen.
The Broncos, however, still have some quality running back options they can target in free agency, including Kenneth Walker III and Travis Etienne.
