The Tennessee Vols are reportedly a frontrunner for a highly touted quarterback from Texas
The Tennessee Vols never slow down when it comes to recruiting quarterbacks.
The Tennessee Vols recently landed a commitment from 2027 three-star quarterback Derrick Baker, and they’re already working on a couple of 2028 quarterback targets.
One of those targets is three-star quarterback Tristin Gaines.
Gaines, 6-foot-1/180 pounds from Waller, TX, is rated in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 9 quarterback in the nation and the No. 16 player in the state of Texas. He’s also rated as the No. 138 overall player in the 2028 recruiting class (which means he’ll likely be a four-star recruit before it’s all said and done).
Tennessee is a “frontrunner” for Tristin Gaines
According to On3’s Sam Spiegelman, the Volunteers are one of the frontrunners for Gaines, along with Houston and Arkansas.
Gaines, who also plays baseball, is scheduled to visit Tennessee for the first time on March 23. He’s also slated to visit Florida this spring.
It’s still very early in Gaines’ recruitment, but the Vols are clearly interested in seeing if the two sides are a match.
Gaines, by the way, isn’t the only 2028 quarterback that Tennessee is recruiting.
The Vols are also showing interest in 2028 four-star quarterback Kingston Preyear.
Preyear, 6-foot-3/195 pounds from Alexander City, AL, is rated by 247Sports as the No. 3 quarterback in the nation and the No. 1 player in the state of Alabama. He’s also rated as the No. 18 overall player in the 2028 recruiting class.
247Sports’ Tom Loy noted that Tennessee is number two, behind Florida, in the battle for Preyear.
Quarterback recruiting never stops for Josh Heupel and the Vols.
