Bryson DeChambeau drops strong quote about Tennessee Vols golfer who’s set to compete in The Masters this week
Tennessee Vols sophomore golfer Jackson Herrington is set to compete as an amateur in The Masters this week. The Tennessee native will provide an orange tint to the otherwise majestically green fairways in Augusta.
There will be a hint of orange at Augusta National this week as Tennessee Vols sophomore Jackson Herrington competes in The Masters.
Herrington is one of six amateurs who will compete in Augusta this week.
The Dickson, TN native will tee off at 8:14 AM ET on Thursday morning. Herrington will be paired with Ángel Cabrera and Sami Valimaki.
Cabrera won The Masters in 2009.
Bryson DeChambeau comments on Jackson Herrington
Bryson DeChambeau, one of the biggest stars in golf, played a practice round with Herrington on Tuesday.
DeChambeau, who is known for his elite ball speed, told reporters that Herrington has an “incredible game”.
“All the way back in 2016, after 35 holes, I was close to leading the tournament as an amateur,” said DeChambeau. “I played with Jackson today, an amateur. And he’s got an unbelievable game. He’s got the same ball speed as me. If he catches fire, he could be doing that (close to leading as amateur), too.”
DeChambeau finished as the low amateur in 2016 (tied for 21st overall).
Herrington told CBS Sports before playing with DeChambeau that he was excited to play with a bigger name in a practice round so he could get used to the bigger crowds that he’ll see when the tournament begins on Thursday.
Ken Venturi holds the record for highest finish by an amateur at The Masters, finishing second (no ties) in 1956.
The highest finish by an amateur this century came in 2005 when Ryan Moore finished tied for 11th.
No amateur made the cut last year at Augusta National.
If Herrington makes the cut on Friday and finishes with the lowest score of the six amateurs, he’ll be recognized in Butler Cabin, along with the winner of the tournament, on Sunday evening.
