ESPN gives Steelers’ Will Howard competition when naming their favorite quarterback landing spots in the 2026 NFL Draft
ESPN has one 2026 NFL Draft prospect who they believe will be a perfect fit in Pittsburgh, and he create competition for Will Howard.
For weeks now, many have believed that it is Aaron Rodgers or bust when it comes to the quarterback situation within the Pittsburgh Steelers’ locker room. Of course, there is second-year player Will Howard, the Ohio State Buckeyes national champion, who many think will be a franchise quarterback.
Well, for Ben Solak from ESPN, that doesn’t seem to be quite the case, as he has labeled one of the more polarizing quarterbacks in the class a perfect fit in Pittsburgh.
ESPN names Pittsburgh Steelers as the best landing spot for LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier
“The connection between the Steelers and Nussmeier is obvious. When Mike McCarthy was the head coach in Dallas, Nussmeier’s father, Doug, was his quarterbacks coach. Doug Nussmeier has stayed in the coaching tree, too, following Kellen Moore to the Chargers, then the Eagles, and then the Saints. In that the Steelers need a developmental QB2 with more legs than 2025 sixth-rounder Will Howard, Garrett Nussmeier would be an option no matter what. The family connection only helps.” – Ben Solak, ESPN
What would the Pittsburgh Steelers get from Garrett Nussmeier?
Nussmeier was one of the top quarterback prospects coming into the 2025 season. He had a fantastic 2024 campaign and was lauded among the premier passers headed into last year. But LSU fell apart, Nussmeier regressed, and his injury situation prevented him from playing his best ball.
He’s a traditional pocket passer who, at his best, will use ball location, velocity, and football intelligence to target every part of the field. I spoke with some sources about Nussmeier (among other QBs in the class) in recent weeks, and here is what I gathered.
How does the league view Garrett Nussmeier?
“[Nussmeier] should be what Quinn Ewers is. A reliable backup. He’s a Davis Mills, Quinn Ewers, Mac Jones kind of player. Reliable, accurate, but lacks the killer instinct to be an NFL starter, he’s a solid QB 2. Jimmy G is who you hope he can become.” – League sources
The way I see it, if Rodgers isn’t back, I’m all for a camp battle between Howard, Nussmeier, and, I guess, you would have to include Mason Rudolph. The bottom line is that the Steelers have to find their next franchise quarterback, and throwing as many darts as possible at the board until they find him is fine by me.
