Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter has one of the most recognizable names in all of football.

Cooter, a former Tennessee Vols quarterback who served as a backup during his time in Knoxville, is most well-known for his unique name, but he’s had a terrific coaching career, too.

The former Vol, who has coached in the NFL since 2009, is entering his fourth season as the Colts’ offensive coordinator. He also previously served as the Detroit Lions’ offensive coordinator.

Jim Bob Cooter reveals how he feels about his famous name

Part of me has always wondered how Cooter, whose real name is James Robert Cooter, feels about his name, mainly because I think it’s treated as a bit of a novelty.

Cooter, though, says he’s embraced the name.

“I never got a great nickname [growing up], just because I guess Jim Bob was it,” said Cooter on NFL Spotlight With Ari Meirov. “But you play enough sports, you start going from town to town (and you get nicknames). I can remember, maybe some basketball games in junior high where the other fans started chanting maybe something not so nice. My name, it’s pretty catchy in chants, too. I think around that time when you’re growing up and you’re playing sports and you start to realize maybe it’s a little bit of a unique name. But I grew up in the South, I grew up in Tennessee.”

“I’ve just embraced it,” continued Cooter. “You’re a young kid playing sports and going to school and doing all of that stuff, and at a certain point you have aspirations to go play in college or whatever. Or maybe doing a little bit of recruiting stuff here and there, and that’s not bad if people remember your name. So I’ve always just embraced it. It is who I am. It’s what my family calls me. It’s what everybody’s called me.”

So there you have it. Jim Bob Cooter is not running away from being Jim Bob Cooter. It’s something he fully embraces, even if it is a unique name.
