In today’s world of college football, receiving a verbal commitment doesn’t mean a whole lot. The Ohio State Buckeyes know firsthand, just like every team, that recruits flip often before a signature is in hand.

Ohio State football’s biggest worry in the class of 2027 just so happens to be their top incoming player. Defensive line coach Larry Johnson landing five-star EDGE DJ Jacobs as a verbal commitment was huge, but the Buckeyes still have to hold on until it’s official.

Top Miami commitment is pushing for Ohio State pledge DJ Jacobs

Last December the Buckeyes landed a commitment from the No. 1 pass rusher out of Roswell, Georgia. When Ohio State received a commitment from Jacobs, it beat out the likes of Miami, Georgia, and just about every other major college football program. However, Miami continues to be a school pushing for the 6-foot-5, 235-pound Jacobs, and their latest commitment is joining the fight.

Five-star CB Donte Wright committed to Miami on May 9 and he’s wasted no time in trying to strengthen the class of 2027 for the Canes.

At this time there are no scheduled visits to Miami for Jacobs in the near future, but he’s visited in the past. There’s major speculation out there that Miami could eventually be the school to flip Jacobs from Ohio State. As we’ve seen, Miami has some of the deepest pockets in the NIL era, and it’s worked to their advantage.

Larry Johnson needs to keep the elite duo together for Ohio State’s 2027 haul

Ohio State picked up a commitment from 2027 EDGE Wyatt Smith last week, giving the Buckeyes another top-100 player. Pairing Smith with Jacobs this cycle would be a huge win for Ohio State if they can hold onto both. Add in the Sierra Canyon duo of defensive linemen Marcus Fakotau and Kasi Currie, and this class could be a dream haul.

It all comes down to the Buckeyes holding onto Jacobs through the summer and fall. Miami is going to continue to make a push, and eventually, a final offer that’s going to be hard to turn down. It’s up to Ohio State to match them along the way.
