Former Tennessee Vols quarterback Joe Milton spent three seasons on Rocky Top.

Current Vols offensive coordinator Joey Halzle was Milton’s quarterbacks coach for all three of those seasons. During Milton’s final year at Tennessee, Halzle was promoted to offensive coordinator after Alex Golesh left Knoxville to take over as the head coach at USF.

Joe Milton shares his thoughts on Joey Halzle

Milton, who is entering his second season with the Dallas Cowboys after playing for the New England Patriots as a rookie, joined WNML’s SportsTalk this week for a quick chat.

During the conversation, Milton was asked for his thoughts on Halzle.

And Milton made it very clear that he’s a big Joey Halzle fan.

“That’s my man right there,” said Milton. “Joey was great. Ever since I got there, he was one of those people that just believed in me. Joey always talked to me one-on-one.

“He always believed in me. He always talked to me one-on-one whenever I needed it. But also, he was just pushing me to be the best I can be, and that’s all you can ask for from a coach. So it was amazing. And the leader that he is, and the way that he called plays — he can get real creative with his play calling. But he can also get you in the right position. So
I love Joey, man. I love Joey and his family for sure.”

Halzle is entering his sixth season at Tennessee and his fourth as the Vols’ offensive coordinator.

Last season, Halzle helped oversee an overhaul of Tennessee’s offense — the program runs a more Pro-Style offense now — while helping the Vols finish with the No. 6 scoring offense in the nation.
