I’m sure clarity will come as the days and weeks unfold, but the timing here is far from ideal. This is a player who was out there during OTAs experimenting as a pass rusher, learning different techniques and ways to get after the quarterback. All anyone could talk about was how this guy could play just about every position on the defensive side of the football. He still can, and he still probably will, but this is not a great start.

Emanwari’s impact on Seattle’s defense cannot be overstated

The truth is, the Seahawks probably don’t win the Super Bowl without Nick Emmanwori. They certainly don’t have nearly as good of a defense if they don’t select him in last year’s NFL Draft, and if he doesn’t produce the way he did as a rookie. He was a tackle savant. This guy was all over the football field. He could play nickel, he could play true safety, and you could even align him as an edge defender.

What made Emmanwori’s rookie season even more impressive was that he was still very raw and very green. The work he was getting in the offseason program suggested the Seahawks were ready to expand his role even further in Year 2. Adding a legitimate pass-rushing element to his game would have taken his versatility to another level entirely.

For the Seahawks, the PUP designation means Emmanwori cannot practice until he’s cleared. It does not necessarily mean he will miss regular-season time, but it does mean he will lose valuable reps during a critical developmental window.
